Who can donate blood?

You can donate blood if you:

  • Are between 18-65 years old
  • Weigh at least 45 kg (50 kg preferred)
  • Have normal body temperature
  • Have hemoglobin level of 12.5 g/dL or higher
  • Have blood pressure between 100-180 mm systolic and 50-100 mm diastolic
  • Are in good general health
How often can I donate blood?

You can safely donate whole blood:

  • Men: Every 3 months (90 days)
  • Women: Every 4 months (120 days)
Note: Your body needs time to replenish red blood cells and iron levels after donation.
How much blood is taken during donation?

During a standard whole blood donation, approximately 350-450 ml (one unit) of blood is collected. This represents only about 8-10% of your total blood volume, which your body quickly replenishes.

Good News: Your body replaces the fluid volume within 24-48 hours and regenerates red blood cells within 4-6 weeks!
Is blood donation safe?

Yes, absolutely! Blood donation is completely safe when done at authorized facilities:

  • All equipment is sterile and single-use
  • You cannot contract any disease from donating blood
  • Medical professionals monitor you throughout
  • Minimal risk of minor side effects like dizziness (rare)
What should I do before donating blood?

Preparation Tips:

  • Get a good night's sleep (at least 7-8 hours)
  • Eat a healthy, iron-rich meal before donation
  • Drink plenty of water (4-5 glasses before donation)
  • Avoid fatty foods on donation day
  • Don't donate on an empty stomach
  • Bring your ID proof and donor card (if you have one)
What should I do after donating blood?

Post-Donation Care:

  • Rest for 10-15 minutes after donation
  • Drink plenty of fluids over the next 24 hours
  • Eat nutritious, iron-rich foods
  • Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for 24 hours
  • Keep the bandage on for at least 4 hours
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for 24 hours
If you feel dizzy: Sit down immediately, lower your head between your knees, and inform medical staff.

How do I register as a donor?

Registration Steps:

  1. Visit our donor registration page
  2. Fill in your personal details, blood group, and location
  3. Complete KYC verification with your Aadhaar
  4. Wait for volunteer verification (usually 24-48 hours)
  5. Get your unique Donor ID and start saving lives!
Why is KYC verification required?

KYC (Know Your Customer) verification ensures:

  • Safety: Both donors and recipients are verified genuine users
  • Trust: Prevents fake registrations and scams
  • Privacy: Your data is encrypted and secure
  • Traceability: Complete donation history and tracking
Your Privacy: We hash your Aadhaar number and never store it in plain text. Only trained volunteers verify documents.
How do recipients contact me?

We protect your privacy using proxy numbers:

  • Recipients see your Donor ID, not your name
  • They call through a Twilio proxy number
  • Your real phone number remains private
  • All calls are logged for safety and tracking
  • You can block unwanted contacts anytime
Can I update my availability status?

Yes! You can update your status anytime from your dashboard:

  • Available: Ready to donate
  • Temporarily Unavailable: On travel, sick, or recently donated
  • Unavailable: Long-term unavailability

Your profile will only be visible to recipients when you're marked "Available".

🏥 Medical Questions

Who cannot donate blood?

You should NOT donate if you:

  • Have cold, flu, or fever in the past week
  • Had major surgery in the past 6 months
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have diabetes with insulin dependency
  • Have heart disease, cancer, or blood disorders
  • Had HIV, Hepatitis B/C, or STDs
  • Consumed alcohol in the past 24 hours
  • Got a tattoo or piercing in the past 6 months
  • Had blood transfusion in the past year
Always inform medical staff about any medications or health conditions before donating.
Can I donate blood while on medication?

It depends on the medication:

  • Generally Safe: Vitamins, minerals, birth control pills
  • Wait Period: Antibiotics (7-14 days after completion)
  • Not Allowed: Blood thinners, cancer medications, immunosuppressants

Always consult with blood bank medical staff about your specific medications.

What blood type is the universal donor?

O Negative (O-) is the universal donor blood type.

Blood Compatibility:

  • O- can donate to: All blood types
  • O+ can donate to: O+, A+, B+, AB+
  • A- can donate to: A-, A+, AB-, AB+
  • B- can donate to: B-, B+, AB-, AB+
  • AB+ (universal receiver) can receive from: All types
O- donors are heroes! Only 7% of people have O- blood, but it's needed in all emergencies.
